Book Review #11 : Private India

Publisher: Random House India
Category: Fiction
Genre: Crime Thriller
Number of Pages: 448

First look at the title and the cover and one can easily figure out that the book has thriller written all over it. But the catch is change in the setup which brings the Private series to our very own tinsel town Mumbai. The cover image giving the befitting start to the story.

The first thing I noticed about the book was that it was thick and had 470 pages and that it was signed by the author. Thanks to Blogadda!

Private India ticks all the boxes required for a thriller. Private India is not restricted to a main plot. It is wrapped up with the sights, sounds and smells of iconic places in Mumbai. It has detailed descriptions of advanced technologies used by Private India as well as explanations for complicated stuff like DNA evidence.

The main story is brilliant. The ending was least expected and unique in a way of its own. But the book is let down by its amateur execution. Some twists are straight out of Bollywood movies, the side plots and the language was equally disturbing.

Most of the book is a narrative, but the chapters involving the killer are in first person. It was distracting and disturbing at the same time. At times, it did not feel that it all was a part of the same book. Unnecessary angles take away the essence of the main story, which is a stand out in itself.

This book is a tedious read. It needs a lot of edits and could have easily been contained under 300 pages. I don't know how this co-authoring thing works, who writes what and whose ideas are prominent. But at the end of the day, this one sure is a  good book but with a good scope of improvement.

The book is fast paced and the chapters are just two or three pages long, which means every time you feel like putting the book down a little voice says: But the next chapter is just 3 pages! And so you continue and it takes immense self disciple to put down the book as you need to do some real world work too. The book is very easy to read as the large font size helps one to read faster!

Also along with the familiar streets of Mumbai, we see subtle glances of Indian Mythology weaved intricately into the story line, which was a first and interesting twist.

This is the first - and I sincerely do hope the last - co-authored book by Ashwin Sanghi and James Patterson. Despite it being a page-turner, I am deeply unimpressed. There are innumerable horrendous bloopers that fill the book. These bloopers take the fun away, cause irritation - even while the story keeps you turning the pages. The net result is that as you complete the book, the normal satisfaction one has on reading a great book is absent.

The constant use of pejoratives and bad words is also totally unlike classic Sanghi, who by-and-large writes clean stuff. The explicit sexual scenes and pointless formulaic vulgarity add nothing to the story, and make for poor reading. These admittedly small points lessen the enjoyment of an otherwise fast-paced action thriller!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

When I Look At Him....

When I look at him, I see a thousand empty rooms. In each one, he is strangling a ghost..

I would be lying if I say, I don't find this beautiful.

Nothing is quite as stunning as the heavy knuckled hand of a man who spends his life beating demons into the ground.

Yet, I see the colour of my future in his eyes. No camera can ever capture the look he has in his eyes for me!

When I look at him I feel, 'I really love this man.' I love him with all his flaws, all his highs, all his lows.

He touches me with his fingers and burns holes in my skin with his mouth. It hurts when I look at him and hurts even when I don't! I can hurl myself into his arms. He is a reflection of me.

At times, it feels like someone has cut me open with a jagged piece of glass.

But I want all of him, today, tomorrow, everyday. Everything I've ever wanted is right before me.

Sometimes, I look at him only to feel how lucky I have been! The absence of him is everywhere I look.

I never thought Love could be so magnificent ever, until I see the sincere look in his eyes, for ME!

Book Review #10 : Losing My Religion

Book Name- Losing My Religion
Author- Vishwas Mudagal
Publisher- Prakash Books India Pvt. Ltd.
Imprint-Fingerprint
Pages-356 Pages
Book Type-Fiction

Losing My Religion is an unpredictable and racy thriller. Vishwas Mudagal has stamped his authority in the writing world with just this debut novel! He truly deserves accolades for citing a tale to remember. The lead protagonist is well groomed. All the characters are well based and engaging. After every page you start asking for more.

The setting of the story is great; you will get a tour of India. It takes you to many places, each unique. The storyline keeps you hooked till the end.

LMR is filled with adventure and romance. And entrepreneurship. I never thought business could be so much of fun. I am very impressed with the way the author has introduced the various elements in it. This book has entrepreneurship, romance, friendship, success, failure.

LMR is written in lucid language. You don't need a dictionary by your side! The book has a right balance of narration and dialogues which makes it an excellent read.

I relished reading the novel. It was hard for me to believe that it’s Vishwas’s first novel. He writes very elegantly and effortlessly!

The title of the book Losing my Religion - has nothing to do with divine or worship. At times you have to lose your faith in something, be absolutely adamant and strong in your belief, take the jump. Leap out of the wall you have built around yourself and take the plunge. You might fall, and most of the times, you'll witness a miracle taking shape around you. That's called 'losing your religion' according to Vishwas.

LMR is super interesting from page 1. Believe me, this is one debut book which shouldn’t be missed. The thing with this book is that it's such a motivational piece! If you have lost it all and want to regain control, chuck the self help books because Vishwas shows you how motivation can be handled with fiction in a beautiful melody.

This isn't just a book, it can motivate you to repel the most dangerous barriers which are standing between you and your success - LKK (Log Kya Kahenge) and MKK (Me Kaise Karunga). Kick them out with an LMR ;)

Relationship Phobia

A strange fear grips me these days. It's related to relationships, commitments. And then it takes me to such a point where I start finding cons in all my relationships.  Basically I start acting timid.

When people ditch each other, abandon each other, it grips me and frightens me. If anybody asks me what is my secret fear, it is about getting abandoned by someone I trust. I fear the emotional baggage that comes with relationships! Being a cheerful girl, I fear of a trauma that might push me underground.

Everyone fears from being rejected or left alone. And why not! After being hurt in a past relationship, exploring a new one is simply uncertain and apprehensive. While moving ahead towards a relationship, it is the fear that holds us back from trying to pursue anything new, be it intimacy, change, commitment or abandonment.

What we don't realise is that the increasing fear prevents us from experiencing the pleasures and stability of a genuine relationship. We all recognise the slightly giddy feeling when someone special comes along. Will he stay? Or leave me?

When a relationship does not work, people often lose faith over the concepts of love, togetherness, and compromise. Trusting anyone after a bad experience naturally becomes difficult.

Every individual these days wants to secure his/her personal interests and well-being before thinking of others. I fear my personal freedom being snatched away by someone dominating! Sometimes, I feel committing to a relationship, is like inviting trouble without any reason and giving an opportunity for the other person to interfere in my way of living. Although I want to love and be loved, I also fear both.

Sometimes, past or someone else's experiences program us to associate loving and being loved with unpleasant experiences and especially with feelings of vulnerability. Commitment phobia heals when you become strong enough to be true to yourself, even in the face of another's anger, rejection, or loss.

I fear the unknown. Bad on my part, being a romance writer! This is one thing, I still need to overcome and build faith in the powers of the universe and most importantly, myself! I think everyone has that one anxiety, one secret fear, a self delusion. What's yours?

Immortality

When you give hope to someone who has lost all of it..

If you answer the prayers of someone totally strange to you..

If you never forget what 'compassion' means..

If you do something 'impossible' for someone..

If you bestow the dignity of life to someone..

Imagine if you're so powerful that you can save lives?

And you do all the above knowing that there is nothing you'll get in return, except good wishes!

What will that make you? GOD-like?

When you choose to give life to someone after you're gone?

Or even when you're alive? By donating blood? Giving a piece of yourself? And become immortal!

You're far more powerful than you think you are! You can rewrite the destinies of the needy!

You can turn goodbyes to reliefs for someone totally strange to you and yet feel totally satisfied about your existence.

Many religions do not approve of organ donation. I ask if these religions do believe in compassion? Second chances? Selfless sacrifice and charity? What does it say about 'saving lives'?

13th August - Organ Donation Day. I support it. Do you?

Weave immortality into your destiny! Let a death be a beginning of another life. Be a hero to someone! Yes. You can! All it takes, is a bit of Love!
