Book Review #136: The Second Life : An Anthology of 25 Life Changing Stories

23209259

Paperback: 224 pages
Publisher: Write India Publishers; first edition (10 October 2014)
Language: English

An awesome compilation of unique stories and they titled it so apt as 'The Second Life'. Take my words some characters of the stories will not leave you forever. All the writers have given their best work here, you will echo my views when you read the stories. I have a story named 'In The Classroom of Life' too. Here is the list of story names and their authors.

Each story has its own flavour. While some are as sweet as a cold breeze, a few are upbeat and thought provoking. It is a highly recommended book with the right ingredients for everyone.

It's a collection of beautiful heart touching stories that can change even the reader's perspective about life. Only few books have this power, and this is one of them.

A particular story that stood out to me and stirred my soul was 'The Hug of Allah and Ishwar'. It left me wondering about the hypocrisy we live in. The religion that teaches us the way to ultimate peace, we use the same religion as a reason to kill. Shameful.

An inspiring book you must get. A worthy gift you can give to anyone.

Book Review #134 : Dented & Painted

The anthology “Dented & Painted” comprises of 23 remarkable short stories. The cover of the collection is beautiful and attractive. The collection is penned down by author Tirupathi Khemka. This book is a must read for all humans due to the depleting mentality of our society. Harsh reality is portrayed that shows you the mirror unto society.

Dented & Painted is appalling in its tone and subject. The stories begin with the opening lines in italics which store in them the essence of the whole story and ends with question marks that leave your mind ticking. These life changing stories shake the insides of your soul. It deals with some of the highly sensitive issues prevailing in our society at large. Each story is instilled with sheer pain, misery & struggle. The complexities of women’s life, how they are tortured, subdued, and tormented, and how they fight back are narrated by the author. The language is bold and comprehensive. On the whole, the collection is nicely compiled and stories are engrossing and have a power that grips you from within. As you continue reading these stories, you develop a strong sense of connection with the theme of feminism. The author has poured his heart into these stories.

‘Male chauvinist pigs’ are well-exposed. The mind-blowing stories are an eye-opener and make you question so many things. The narrative is quite strong and details are well written. Sometimes the pace gets fast, though the emotions are well maintained. True reality is pictured which pinches you somewhere, depicting the cruelty of patriarchal society in which we continue to live. The stories expose a wide horizon of themes from prostitution to rapes, women as victims to women as fighters, the sufferings of women to struggles of women, women as creators to the women as destructors, the divine to the not so divine women, and many more. I can't get a few stories out of my mind; they were very impactful. I felt proud of a few ladies, yet felt sad for some.

Dented & Painted is a complete page turner. It leaves your eyes moist with tears and you feel how crippled you have become by letting others dominate you and decide things for you. The author has made very interesting and keen observations before penning down each one of these wonderful pieces of writing. Kudos to him for his brilliant attempt! He proved the power of pen and the wonders that it can do.

Fishbowl Lives

There is nothing groundbreaking about this post, since everyone is aware of the dark side of the glamour world…the desperate struggle that newcomers go through, the compromises they have to make and the drugs and the partying which can take its toll.

The fashion industry is choc-o-bloc with debauched people and that it is tough to get ahead without making compromises, the competition is fearsome and the going is tough.

Successful models are often sad, lonely, broken people, addicted to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes. Godfathers are cruel, manipulative, exploitative.

Only those who maintain their honour, dignity, identity in a cruel world that spills over with grime behind the glamour manage to sail. Many fall prey to the hazards of their fishbowl lives.

Book Review #70 : Tale 0’12

Book Overview~

Every life event is a story. In fact, every moment of our life is part of a story being happened. We always ignore those because we think stories have no connection to real life happenings. But when we read stories or fictions suddenly we connect ourselves to the storyline or some of the characters emotionally or otherwise. That’s why stories always fascinate us, entertain us & give us some lessons of life.

‘Tale O’ 12 is a collection of twelve stories/experiences inspired from real life events written in a fictional narrative. One would definitely connect to the characters of the stories in some manner or other because all the stories have something that’s related to everyone’s life.

Tale 0’12 by Biranchi N Acharya is the first book from “Bloggers To Authors” program at BlogAdda.

Short stories are always a gem to read and require less concentration, they do leave a lasting impression on the reader's mind. When I read the blurb, I was excited to read the stories which were inspired from real life since they are more dramatic, realistic and adventurous.

The Cover Page~

The cover page very clearly gives the message that the book has twelve stories. It has clocks in concentric circles.

Dislikes~

Spelling mistakes – I can recall two instances of a misspelled word (“clean ‘saved’ face”) in two different stories. As a reader, it is very annoying when one is immersed in a story – but you have to ‘sudden break’ because you spot an error! This book is edited well, but proofreading is where it failed. There are errors throughout the book, which could have been avoided.

Likes~

Language – The simplicity of words makes it easy for the reader to connect with the stories.

Ordinary realistic stories with lessons- All the twelve stories narrated by the author Biranchi N Acharya are very ordinary and relatable, and send out strong lessons.

The readers looking for some inspiration on various insightful topics like politics, religion, society etc. would definitely like this book. The author’s knowledge on these topics and how he explains them in simple words is superb. The author despite narrating his own perspective and inferences, leaves the reader to think about the experience and form their own opinions, learn their own lessons.

Real life events have inspired these twelve stories, making them relatable to all readers. We can definitely see ourselves in some of these characters, and we would have definitely gone through a few of these experiences in our lives as well. Tale O’12 is a relatable book that way.

One important thing that every story includes in its narration is the fact that, though the author is an experienced and well-read person, he never stops learning and the thirst for knowledge is kept alive by him. This is something that all of us should strive for.

The twelve stories from Tale O’12 range from around 10 to 40 pages each. Each story is a delightful read. A good collection of short stories, worth a read!

Book Review #66 : Silent Realities

Author: Ranjan Kaul
Price: Rs 350/-
Pages: 214

Blurb: A cluster of 10 stories tilting between the real and unreal, with myriad characters in an ever changing multilayered society. The range captures the frailties, moods and impulses of human behavior.

Silent Realities is a set of short stories with every page packed with suspense. Very ordinary people and events that one comes across in life are transformed into tales that touch you. The characters come alive and Ranjan Kaul captures the emotions of people with such clarity that one can feel the touch of pain or joy as it comes along.

The author has a fine eye for detail and uses it to create an atmosphere for its locations. He sharply brings into perspective the images that are blurred to our everyday lives as we choose to coast along in our own world! There is a mixture of conflicting feelings as we await each story to end while simultaneously secretly wishing that it would continue.

The book is a non-stop read. The language is overall east to understand, clean and refined. I loved the stories of – the insecure lover and the little girl who helps her mother steal. These stories speak to you and are so relateable.

This is a great book, brilliant on every score. The stories can be read in any order. Each story is a gem.

3 stories impressed me the most, namely - The Slap, The Nest and Touch. They keep the readers hooked. I personally loved the stories The Slap and Touch which had an unhurried pace as they concentrated on the growing up phase of teens & adults and their complex interactions.

The only thing I disliked is – since the author describes everything too much in detail, there is an over description of few things, that could have been avoided.

I do hope that Author Ranjan has more stories to tell in days to come. Overall, this one is a decent and an enjoyable read. This book leaves a lingering aura.

Rating - 4.5/5

Nano Fiction 26 : Hardest Goodbye

I love the following lines from 'Alvida' song of the movie D-Day.

"Umr bhar ka saath de jo, Kyun wohi pyaar ho!
Kyun na mit ke jo fanaa ho, Woh bhi pyaar ho!
Naa adhoori yeh kahaani
Naa adhoora yeh fasaana
Mar ke bhi naa hum kahenge, Alvida!"

I wonder, why love is always assumed to be true, when it is of the type, "..They lived happily ever after.." Because many of us are not fortunate enough to experience it, which doesn't mean our love wasn't true. Sometimes, people are bad and sometimes, situations.

Some people are our hardest goodbyes. And all you have to do, is accept that goodbye. Sometimes, holding on does more damage than letting go.

You certainly release them. You stop allowing their history to have any meaning for you today. You let them move on, and let them fall in love again too. And when you see this person you have let go, you realize you have no reason to be sad. The person you knew, exists somewhere, but you are separated by too much time to reach them again.

Yet, when I see people separated, I feel, every individual deserved a second chance for that one 'Sorry', 'I Love You' which could have possibly mended things.

Yesterday, I saw 'Sanam Teri Kasam' movie, I do not know if many of you know about it. I was released parallel to 'Sanam Re' and 'Ghayal, Once Again". It is intense and emotional, majorly shot at real locations which makes it easy to connect. It has a very lovely dialogue - "Log saath isliye nahi rehte, kyunki wo ek dusre ki galtiyon ko bhool jate hai; woh saath isliye rehte hai, kyunki woh ek dusre ko maaf kar dete hai." The music by Himesh Reshammiya is soulful and one of the highlights of the film. The songs are penned well and bring out the mood of the film, especially Haal-e-dil and Bewajaah. The 'doomed love' angle does have its charm and Sanam Teri Kasam does tug at your heart-strings. I loved it.

Next Nano Fiction is here! Do let me know in the comments below, how it was! Keep smiling, stay motivated and rule your day!

Book Review #56 — She: Ekla Cholo Re

Authors: Dr. Shayan Haq; Santosh Avvannavar
Publisher: Hoffen; 1 edition (2015)
Paperback: 58 pages

Our behavioural traits are dictated by the society. Every person has to be a male or a female to live with peace in the society. But, about the people who can’t be classified as either a 'he' or 'she'? Society ignores them, and trans-genders have been the victims of the irrationalities of the society since eternity.

The authors have done a commendable job in picking a unique plot with a bold and controversial topic that is supported by a wonderful story.

She: Ekla Cholo Re is a story of one such person, Kusum. The only way Kusum can belong to our society is if she denies her own existence. Otherwise, she has to walk alone in this over-crowded world which considers her a taboo.

She: Ekla Cholo Re begins with Professor Raj, who finishes his class, and goes for a long drive. He meets Kusum and gives her a lift. As their journey progresses Kusum opens up to the sympathetic stranger, and reveals her story.

A female, born in a male body, Kusum has difficulty following the behavioural dictates of the society. She strives to understand herself while her family tries to mould her to society’s expectations. Against her family’s wishes, she follows her heart with dire consequences.

The plot is tightly woven with lovely poems, which blend with the narrative. The book is a quick read, but it lingers with the reader for a long long time. It depicts how much we so called ‘normal people’ are insensitive to the plight of those we don’t consider 'normal'.

Kusum is an extremely likeable, courageous character. Since, Kusum tells her story to Raj, their conversation in the car forms the crux of the story. The simple and lucid language is easy to follow. There are a few grammatical errors, and typos though.

The design of the title is interesting; the 'S' in SHE appears inverted, signifying the gender issue of Kusum and the image of Howrah bridge is embedded within SHE, symbolically representing the Bengali origin of the theme song, 'Ekla Cholo Re'.

The tag-line of the novelette - "a story meant to motivate all and sundry irrespective of their circumstances", perfectly holds true. Kusum’s courage to stand up for herself, and her determination to continue her path even after being abandoned will surely inspire everyone.

Kudos to the authors for writing Kusum’s story and bravely and vividly portraying the picture of a person caught up in a dilemma. Some stories need to be told, and read so that our society rises above some social stigmas.

This book deserves appreciation because it completely engrosses you with quick and focussed narration rather than setting the scene or irrelevant character structure. A touching love story, subtly wound around Kusum's internal conflicts and the book emphatically reiterates the fact that 'transgenders' are normal people too of great self-respect and admiration.

To those of us who have never come in close association with the life of a transsexual, Kusum's story shall give a new understanding of a unique kind of human emotion. And I recommend readers to spread this genuine social message far and wide.

As it is said “Good things come in small packages”, 'She: Ekla Cholo Re' very aptly justifies it! It’s a sweet and a very short story with the pungent message that says, 'Never give up and move on even if you are alone. Don’t live the way, the society expects you to.'

Highly recommended for those who are looking for a good yet thought provoking book. Overall, this is a book to remember. I admire the way the authors have packed so much in just 58 pages!

Rating - 4.8/5

P.S: A review copy was provided by the author in exchange of an honest review.

Nano Fiction 22 : Dying Mother's Blog

Hello there!

Today's thought for the day - "Money can't buy you life!"

This Nano Fiction is a little bit of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', digital style, though! It takes a look at another level blogging can be taken to. I have seen so many people documenting their children's activities on their blogs. Imagine how good it would be for their children to see their childhood flashing before their eyes one day!

I wonder how many people will still read my blog if I die one day?

Some of us have a big share of digital life - I mean, we writers, share things we love to. It becomes a digital record, sort of! Something everyone can see even after we no longer are there. A part of us is always available - online. Such is the effect of technology!

Some days, you have stories to share, but do not get perfect words to put them into. Today is one such day! Without much ranting and cribbing, here's the next Nano Fiction.

Happy reading!

Today is Fri-Yay! But not totally for me; because tomorrow isn't a holiday for me. *cribs*

Nano Fiction 17 : Empty Heart

The thing I love about my profession is that it never makes me feel grown up. A teacher always remains a student first.

I still bring home fat library books to prepare for my lecture and I used to do so even when I was a student. You never stop learning. Life is pretty much the same! Learning and just more learning. Since I love doing it, it doesn't seem forceful. In fact, being a teacher requires you to study even more.

Do what you love, life will love you back. And always be willing to learn - from books, from people, from other's mistakes (because you cannot and should not do all the mistakes yourself!)

Observe more, judge less. And when life shows you someone's true colours, please do not paint a different picture altogether. You will fool yourself and end up hurting your own self.

Get into anything when you are ready for it - personally and professionally or else you will mess it up hugely. And always demand respect. Anything that doesn't respect you, doesn't make you stay longer.

Similarly, you do not have to get into relationships because others say so, or because you are aging or because it is necessary as a 'social obligation'. Take your time. You will not only cause yourself damage, but also to your partner, if you hurry.

With this short gyan for today, here's the next Nano Fiction! I can't believe I reached the 17th Nano Fiction. The idea of it, came over randomly, sipping a coffee mug! So true, when coffee works, everything else starts working! :D

Nano Fiction 14 : Waiting

Time is important. The time that you give your family and loved ones, no amount of wealth makes up for it. You do not know what you are enjoying for the last time, value it. And most importantly, don't make your loved ones crave for your time.

Appreciate people that always have time for you. To listen to you, to be with you. They are probably the best kind of people.

Do something as if it is your last time, put in your best - in loving someone, in helping others, because you never know, it might be the last time you're doing it.

I take this opportunity to thank each of my reader, who takes out time to read what I write. Also, a very Happy 2016 to all my readers!! I am going to count all my blessings and list down - what made me happy each day and collect the chits in a jar starting on January 1, 2016! And on 31st December, 2016, I am going to open it and say a big thank you to the Universe for all the lovely things.

How are you going to count your blessings?

P.S: This Nano Fiction inspired by the movie Bewafaa (2005)!

Nano Fiction 13 : Can't Unlove You

People say, 'Love is blind.' I totally disagree. Infatuation is blind, love is all-seeing and accepting. Love is seeing all flaws and still accepting them. It is accepting their bad habits and mannerisms, still making it work. Love is recognizing all their insecurities and fears and understanding your role is to comfort.

Love is not fragile like infatuation, love will not shatter when life is imperfect, it will instead strengthen if it is real.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much you fought or how little you talked, if you're certain that he/she is the only person in the universe who could make you feel loved even with their silence - you shouldn't give up at any cost!

Besides, I feel there are some people you can't un-love. Even if God shows you their true color over and over again, you continue to paint a different picture; because you cannot see them in the wrong light ever. You only love and love such people. It doesn't matter what they've said or haven't done because you are going to love them anyway. There is going to be that soft spot in your heart for them, a feeling of warmth that will overtake you every time you will think of them. You just can't help loving them. Who said love is complicated? Love is simple, it requires no reason to thrive.

Nano Fiction 11 : Incompatibility

Sometimes, two people who cannot live without each other are made to live without each other. People are not bad, I would say, situations are.

Together you could have been exactly what the other needs, but then life is a bitch at times.

It is hard to think about them ever being with someone else. Feelings are consuming and intoxicating.

The fact is: we are finding ourselves with big houses and broken homes, high incomes and low morale, secured rights and diminished civility. We are excelling at making a living but too often failing at making a life.

We celebrate our prosperity but yearn for purpose. We cherish our freedoms but long for connection. In an age of plenty, we feel spiritual hunger. The hunger of belonging.

Communication, understanding to one another, the give and take is very important to sustain a relationship. Incompatibility should never be a reason for relationships to fail, because all humans are different and hence incompatible. Communication is the bridge between them.

We forgive ourselves for so many mistakes, but fail to forgive that one person who wrongs us once. We need more of communication, more forgiveness, more selfless love!

Addicted to writing, so here's the next Nano Fiction. Happy reading!

Nano Fiction 10: Treasure The Words

I have observed that quite a lot of people do not take breakups in a way they should. I mean no one wants to experience a break up, but once it happens, I see many people crib or bitch about the other person. Whatever that person has done (actions) or not done (inactions), whatever be the reason of separation, it is painful - if you were REALLY involved in the relationship.

But what I do not appreciate is when people roam about explaining others in person or hinting on social media sites - what wrong the other person did, clarifying their own sides and explaining how right they are. To me, it is a sign of an extremely weak person. I don't understand that if it caused you so much disturbance or pain, why didn't you talk about it to the person who caused it there and then? Why go about defaming anyone or showing how clean your side is, once everything is over!? If you know you are so right, why clarify? Don't you think the other person also has the option of doing what you're doing? But they don't choose to defame you or talk ill about you in public- ever wondered why? Because they truly love you.

And btw, who in the world anyways wants to know your devdas kind of stories? Half of them are happy you have sorrows and half are not interested - they only oblige to hear you out of friendship.

When people do such things, I wonder if there ever was love between the two of them!? And if they do wrong to you, doesn't mean you have to give it back to them. Hold on! Love is never about revenges. Khalil Gibran says, "Between what is said and not meant, and what is meant and not said - most of the love is lost."

Ignorance is a bliss at times. Flow with what life has in store for you, don't try controlling every outcome!

There are so many beautiful instances in every relationship! Why do people always remember the bad things? You might have spent some good times too. When you both have done 99 good things for each other, why do you remember the only one thing he/she didn't do?

Not for anyone else's sake, but for yourself, remember the good and let go of the bad. So that you are free of negative energies. Karma will do the justice to whoever was wrong. If you had given up then, GIVE IT UP TOTALLY even now, from your wildest thoughts too - G.I.V.E  I.T. U.P.

There's no point in going round and round about the same things again and again. You hinder your personal growth. And it does not ever take one hand to clap. So it's better that both sides reflect and think what their own flaws have been, rather than playing blame games! Common, we ought to be mature enough to handle such things!

I write this Nano Fiction so that people start concentrating on the happy things in a relationship than wrong ones. Enjoy and appreciate it while it lasts. Concentrate on little things they do for you and the words that people tell you. Treasure the words. Because people may eventually change. Their good words don't change. They remain as they are in the history.

Learn to handle your loss. Be positive and be thankful to the wonderful times spent together. Be mature enough to understand the fact that we don't have a forever with certain people and their time does get over soon. Take them as a lesson or a blessing or both and look ahead.

Whether to choose to hook up again or stay single, life still offers a lot more than a boyfriend or a girlfriend or a wife or a husband. Look for it!

Choose to remember the good. Enjoy little moments. Stop chasing people who don't care for you, or your apologies or your goodwill.

Leaving the readers with a lot of positivity, happiness and here's the Nano Fiction - all full of goodness and sweetness.

Today I am reminded of a very beautiful song "Main Na Bhoolungi.. Inn kasmon ko, Inn rasmo ko, Inn rishtey naaton ko!"

Kill them with love, I say! ;)

Nano Fiction 9 : Marital Rape

"Is a wife merely body parts?" I ask.

What compels a wife to continue living with her husband who is a sex-maniac? What kind of man commits such atrocious acts on his wife, almost daily? How does he get away with this brutality? Is it because marital rape is not a criminal offence, compared to one committed on an outsider? Is marriage for such depraved men a license to rape because of the 'implied consent' which comes with wedlock?

Wonder on basic tenets of common sense, how does a cruel, inhuman marriage remain sacred? What is sacrosanct about it?

In cases of sexual violence in marriage, the woman is a victim. She is degraded, humiliated and made to feel unwanted.

If a marriage is still continuing, it is because she is submitting to it, she is weak, poor, and afraid, has children, is dependent, roofless, and reconciled to fate. She is also often ignorant of the legal help available.

It's time we empower our women, to fight against anything that harms and humiliates them - even if that comes under a sacrosanct relation called 'marriage'. A woman does not have to submit to whatever has been thrown at her. She and only she, can save herself.

Nano Fiction 7 : Author

Recently, my blogger friends, Preethi Venugopala and Mayank Kashyap published their books.

This Nano Fiction inspires me to start re-writing the book I started way back in 2013 and haven't touched it since then.

It’s much harder to write a book than people think. Because the words never come out the way they sounded in your head. And it takes a long time to get those words out.

A  novelist creates a world for the reader. Then the reader creates a world for the novelist. The respect is priceless.

Isolating.  Exhilarating.  Absorbing.  Depressing.  Isolating.  Urgent, pressured and stressful. Exciting.  Terrifying.  Profoundly saddening.  Challenging.

Being an author is all this, but totally worth it. Having your name in print is profoundly amazing! Hope this motivates me and others to never quit writing.

Happy reading.

Nano Fiction 6 : Love Heals

Hello readers!

Today, I am verrrryyyy happy!

I had an amazing defence for my Master's thesis. Officially, MTech is over. Now, PhD! *hides* because I want a 'Dr.' ahead of my name. THAT'S IT!

One and a half hour. 102 slides presentation. External examiner. Grilling session. But it's all done.

Ahhhhh *loud scream* *happy dance*

I would like to thank soooo many supportive people who were with me in this amazing journey and always had faith in me!

I am grateful to SAMEER, IIT Bombay for my MTech internship and S.P.I.T for an amazing exposure to research!

Thank you Universe for all the positive vibes.

Just a thought - "Life is a balance sheet and in the end there always is profit and everything tallies."

A romantic Nano Fiction for today, because today I am happy and not in a Devdas-writer-mood or not in killing-a-character-mood today. Not today! :D

Happy reading. Do leave your precious comments below!

Nano Fiction 4 : First Night

Hello! So the next Nano Fiction is a bit cheesy! And I was bored weaving sad, heartbreaking stories.

After I finished drafting this one, I was left smiling.

Well, I guess that's the effect reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ has on you! (Chuckles) Oh, you can judge me now, I don't care! :P

A hyped book needs to be read. It calls for your attention, after all!

By the way, I super love this song from Viraasat and probably that's how I wanted this little piece of fiction to end - with a lyrical note leaving the readers to imagine a lot ahead! *winks*

Nano Fiction 1 : Tense

A big hello to all who stumbled upon my blog accidentally or are loyal readers! Hi! I value each one of you.

Today, I have something exciting to share! I am starting a new section on my blog, today on, called the “Nano Fiction”! My major aim to start it off is to help myself build stories in the minimum possible number of words and improve my word power.

I like trying new things and this is one of them. I have pledged to invest more time in my blog and improve my writing skills.

Inspired by many fellow bloggers, story tellers, Terribly Tiny Tales and so many others, I wanted to take it up too.

I may not be exceptional, but I definitely wanted to try it! Who is a better judge than the reader? So here’s the first one. Do leave your comments below and let me know how it is!
